Around England – Long-distance leg

500 nautical miles

Let's take a long trip along the English coast. We have 500 nautical miles ahead of us from Liverpool, making a stopover in Swanage, and further to the French city of Honfleur in the estuary of Seine.

The trip starts in Liverpool, the homeland of legendary The Beatles. These days it's a lively tourist center with a multiplicity of attractions. It has something for everyone: museums and underground mazes, the largest Anglican cathedral and rowdy night life.

In the days past many ships left Liverpool New World bound, seeking for better fate. The majority of medieval Liverpudlians were farmers and fishermen, the city was also quite often visited by French wine traders on their way to Great Britain.

After we're done enjoying Liverpool, we plot a course for France. On our way there we might (?) visit the ports of Milford or Falmouth, and definitely will make a stopover in Swanage There our old time friends making a Pirate festival. Arrival to Swanege scheduled for 30 June, evening. At this leg we have to cover a significant distance in just a week, which means there will be long passages and day and night watches.

You'll have plenty of time to get acquainted with the ship and become a full-pledged crew member. In the day watches we are going to learn sail handling and knot tying, “man-overboard” procedure, tacking and holding the course when you're at the helm. We are going to figure out signs of underwater hazards and what the buoys are there for. In the night we'll ask the stars about our position and study the ships' and lighthouses' signal lights, and of course we'll keep ourselves warm with funny stories and strong hot tea.

You are going to taste the life in a team, which way too quickly becomes your second family. Shtandart is defined by her people. We cook together, we climb the rigging together, haul the lines and set the sails together. Together we get excited and worried and discover the world together too. Aboard the ship in a day  you learn and experience more than you would in a month ashore.

Once the white rocks of England are behind us, we dock in the lovely French city of Honfleur. Our trip will then be over and we'll bid our goodbyes, leaving you overwhelmed with new knowledge and experiences and looking forward to see you again.
