300 nautical miles

This would be a perfect first trip aboard Shtandart. Or a brief return if you don’t have time for a longer one.

This trip starts with a maritime festival in Sète, where we celebrate the maritime traditions and meet with the whole armada of friendly tall ships. Next a 2-3 day passage to Castellón de la Plana. Not long enough to get sick and tired of the swell even if you’re not used to it. And not short enough to miss out on the sunsets and sunrises, brisk winds and wide open seas.

Itinerary
The night of April 12th and the morning of April 13th we spend in Sète. We have to do the initial safety training and the first climbing aloft exercise. And last but not least we need some time to enjoy the festival and visit other participating ships before we have to prepare for departure. You may want to come a little earlier for that.

We’re leaving on 13th of April, around noon, with the spectacular parade of sail. The prevalent winds in the Gulf of Lion are northerlies, so you can count on some good sailing. Ahead of us are 90 miles to the end of the Gulf and about 200 south-west along the Spanish coast. Depending on weather we may stop by Palamós or Tarragona or have an anchorage in the sheltered bight by Sant Carles de la Ràpita.

Sail training
Every trip aboard Shtandart, even a short one, means setting and hoisting sails, bracing the yards, and standing watch at the helm. You are no passenger!

The amount of knowledge you can gain is totally up to you. Our watch officers and the Captain are eager to share their experience, so pile them up with questions! Knots, modern and traditional navigation, radio communications, sail trim – you can learn about it, see how it works and try it out yourself.
